In 1776, The Continental Congress decided the United States needed its own flag with 13 stars and 13 stripes for the 13 colonies.
The flag was red, white and blue, but the First Continental congress never explained why those colors were chosen. In 1782, Congress declared that the color red stands for bravery, white for purity, and blue for justice. However this refered to the Great Seal of the United States not the flag.
